Travellers with passports outside of the ECOWAS region will need to confirm visa requirements specific to their country. Should a visa be required, you can apply for and secure a valid travel visa from your nearest Ghana Embassy, or via our Visa-on-Arrival and airport protocol service.

Yes. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required on arrival into Ghana for travelers aged 9 months and older, and you could be denied entry without it. Ensure you have the full vaccination and certificate at least 10 days prior to departure.

Yes. Travel insurance is mandatory to confirm a place on all trips with Enroute54. You must purchase comprehensive cover before traveling, covering all overseas medical costs (including medical repatriation and evacuation), the full cost of your trip and flights, and any overstay or additional expense due to incidentals or illness.

Yes. There are mosquitoes in Ghana, so be prepared. Seek medical advice about antimalarial treatments beforehand, pack appropriate mosquito repellent spray or cream, and cover up with long-sleeved shirts and trousers, especially after sunset.

Ghana is a relatively safe country. Violent crime rates are low, and petty crime can often be avoided by being vigilant and careful with personal belongings. Ghanaians are renowned for being friendly and helpful toward foreigners, though it is best to keep overly friendly strangers at arm's length as petty crime is common.

The official currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). Keep up with conversion rates as they change frequently. Although most restaurants, clubs and hotels accept cards, cash is the best option whenever possible. Carry small notes for personal purchases to avoid missing out where vendors do not accept cards.

Local forex bureaus offer better exchange rates than the airport, and we can advise on where to change money. You can also exchange dollars for cedis at the hotel, where better rates are normally offered for larger bills. Please note that only newly issued USD notes are accepted.

Major credit cards are accepted at established venues such as major restaurants and hotels, but smaller vendors, shops and taxi drivers usually cannot accept cards. Visa and Mastercard work where card payment is available; American Express and Discover are rarely accepted. Notify your bank of your travel plans so cards are not frozen, and research any foreign-transaction fees.

ATMs are available, and you may be able to withdraw cash from Visa and Mastercard ATMs with your card. Check with your bank to confirm you can make withdrawals in Ghana and to confirm exchange rates. Once enabled by your bank and once you have advised them of your travel, you can withdraw freely with Visa and Mastercard.

Travelers who wish to explore independently can get around easily using the Uber, Yango or Bolt apps. You can also hire private cars or use local taxis or buses.

Travelers can access local SIM cards or MiFi devices to stay connected at an extra cost. The Enroute team can help secure these and advise on the best data plans for 3G and 4G networks. If you would like this option, advise the team in advance of arrival so we can prepare.
